We realize a controllable Fermi accelerator by colliding ultracold atoms with movable potential barriers. A device approximately 100 micrometres across produces atomic jets with speeds above 0.5 metres per second. Adding dissipation enables tests of the energy spectra associated with cosmic-ray acceleration. The experiment connects cold-atom control with mechanisms relevant to high-energy astrophysics.
